This show was a benefit to raise money for the Capoeiristas, for trips to Brazil, Equipment, Etc.
We went on immediately after the samba dancers, I was wondering how I was going to follow them.. but I managed and warmed up the crowd for JAH SUN.

What a show! Pier 23 is a fun venue to perform at! JWS started out the evening. MASSAGANA took the stage with MIKE MEEZY and the HIGH GRADE ALL STARS, followed by SOUL MEDIC, BIANCAMANKAI, and myself. Next was The Mor Luv Band with LADY PASSION, WINSTRONG, and ROCKER-T. We played well, the Bay seemed to appreciate our show and we had an absolute blast. One of our keyboardists' parents were kind enough to put us up at their house...all 13 of us. They spoiled us. Meals, swimming pool, video games, wine and beer, ping pong, and a piano...SPOILED. Thanks again.

We were also joined by JTHESARGE's close friend and fellow member of MAGIC HEART GENIES: MYKA9. This was the last time I saw my dear friend, MOESE ANGEL.

We recently acquired a new trombonist a talented young man by the name of ALEX "BABYBACK" BOTKIN. This was his first show he held down all the horn parts on his own... nicely done. We'll keep him! Great show at the Red Fox Tavern. It was encouraging to see that we could pull 150+ people w/ barely any advertising done.

Grew up in Arcata, but never went to the I street block party. Cool ass event! Huge enthusiastic crowd. A photographer was all over the stage / in everyone's face and he almost experienced the wrath of SARGE! Good times in A-Town.

Arrived on site and checked out SISTER CAROL and THE MIGHTY DIAMONDS. This venue is a trip because there is NO CEL SERVICE! It makes for a different vibe, people have no choice but to be 100% present. Checked into the hotel caught some ZZZZs, wake up, show up, and rip up! Great show JAH SUN's band killed it. Crucial guest spot by MESSENGER SELAH! After the show, we watched some more music then eventually we SLOWLY made our way back to Humboldt.

Arrived at High Altitude Club with the Vidagua ladies. Watched MR. LEX perform... freakin hilarious. Came on w/ JWS hi-fi on the ones and twos. It was a huge thrill looking out at all the reggae fans in the audience, they were ready to PARTY! Towards the end of my set, I performed my
tune, Ishi Dube Rise on top of the come around riddim.... just then I looked over and saw COLLIE BUDDZ standing ten feet away. I wheeled up the tune, he gave me a hug, and I gave him the mic. All of my earlier disappointment melted away. This was a pretty cool experience for me.

This was our third year camping at what has become known as Lion Camp. I spent hours and hours organizing and preparing for REGGAE RISING but no matter how much I try to cover each detail, it's always hectic. Saturday morning, Jah Sun and his band and me and my band congregated backstage, the musicians set up and it was show time. From the dressing room I could hear JAH SUN and HIGH VOLTAGE absolutely killing it!! We used an all horn instro of Satta Massagana to transition between bands, and there I was again for a third time on the Reggae Rising. (on the river) I am so thankful. Our set went nicely despite a few things (like forgetting a lyric and falling on my ass!)... but for some reason I got really disappointed in myself. By the end of the set we had guest spots by: LUNA ANGEL, MESSENGER SELAH, SOUL MEDIC, DJ GIDEON, RAS ATTITUDE and more!!! THANK YOU EVERYONE!!

Mendo white-out party?... Don't know. Brought engineer and MASSAGANA DRUMMER, COREY WINER along to mix the show. We hooked up our sound board to the myriad of sub-woofers and speakers and were ready to run tings. (no matter how crusty the bar was... that's nothing new) I don't think the crowd was in the mood for roots and lover's rock, I think they wanted to hear Hip-Hop and Dancehall. That night was the second or third time that I had encountered Mike Marshall. He expressed an interest in my music, and I was already a fan of his, so we exchanged info. We wrapped up the sound system, went to sleep.... and started all over again!

I'm not used to quality hotels (usually sleep in a sleeping bag, don't go barefoot, and try not to touch anything), I felt like Kevin from Home Alone. We arrived at Club Six and the session was Rammm. JWS Always does it right, it's good to know that they are behind the controls when you are about to perform.It is always a joy to watch WINSTRONG and SOUL MEDIC perform. This session made me further realize the potential within this group of artists called LIONCAMP.

Drove to San Antonio and played a show at a nice place which i gather is owned by the a relative of one of the HEAVYWEIGHT DUB CHAMPIONS. The people were so cool. Reminded me of Humboldt folks. The next morning, bassie, gitzy, keysie and I flew back to Oakland and drove back to Humboldt.
03/12/2008 08:00 PM - FLAMINGO CANTINA (SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST)
We arrived at the Austin Convention Center. This city practically gets taken over for this event. Our fearless leader, JAH SUN figured out where we needed to go in order to get our SXSW badges.... the top floor ....and I'm scared of heights. Its one thing in an elevator, but this place had really, really tall, mostly glass escalators. I tried to remain calm, but vertigo kicked in. Just get me to the top fast! Once on the top floor, I remained completely still, hugging the wall. As soon as I got my badge, I was in the elevator and on the bottom floor quick style! Enough about my fears. There were drawings, workshops, demos, gift bags, seminars and all kinds of stuff throughout the city. Eventually it was time to load in sound check and perform. This experience was entirely different than the previous night. There were other reggae artists and fans steadily steaming in and out of this venue. We played our set and were well received. Also playing that night were: INNER VISIONS, KUSH and the BLOOD FIRE ANGELS, the AGGROLITES and more. The place was packed! Afterwards, we took the opportunity to check out the full SXSW experience. We went to Sixth Street which though I've never been, reminded me of Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras. We stayed up late partying... and had a wonderful time!

The THREADGILLS is a historic venue. Many greats including JANIS JOPLIN, WILLIE NELSON, STEVIE RAY VAUGHN, and many more either got their start there, or have performed there at some point! It is a restaurant and a bar with an amphitheater outside. Throughout the evening, there were a number of performers. Almost every act was one or two, or three guys playing either country/ folk/ or some sort of Americana.... it was going to be an interesting genre switch. Eventually I heard the MC's voice over the P.A... "In just a few minutes here, we're gon' have Jah Sun and the boys up here".... "just a few minutes?" I thought, "this is a 7-piece band with drums, bass, keys guitar, and the whole nine yards." After eating up a good part of our time slot with a whirlwind sound check, we played the show. I'm not sure most of the patrons knew quite what to think about us, but JAH SUN's family and friends were very supportive!

Thanks to JAH SUN, I was able to fly to Austin, Texas and perform at South By South West. EXPLAIN WHAT SXSW IS! Jah Sun, The HIGH VOLTAGE BAND, and I boarded our plane in Oakland late that evening and finally arrived in Austin at around 7AM. Eventually we got situated at a friend's house. Jahn (who used to live in Humboldt) was so hospitable to us BIG UP!!

but these kinds of events are prone to being awkward or poorly organized. this was a little of both. BUT I believe they were able to raise a decent amount of funds to rebuild a women's shelter for battered and abused ladies and children.

What an event! Amazing catering company, Awesome grounds, Tasty bubbly, Solar stage, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC was there... But I felt like S#!T When we took our set break, I got to eat some of the delicious food, and sample the bubbly.... when we came back, I felt fine and we killed it!

Mendo white-out party?... Don't know. Brought engineer and MASSAGANA DRUMMER, COREY WINER along to mix the show. We hooked up our sound board to the myriad of sub-woofers and speakers and were ready to run tings. (no matter how crusty the bar was... that's nothing new) I don't think the crowd was in the mood for roots and lover's rock, I think they wanted to hear Hip-Hop and Dancehall. That night was the second or third time that I had encountered Mike Marshall. He expressed an interest in my music, and I was already a fan of his, so we exchanged info. We wrapped up the sound system, went to sleep.... and started all over again!

Jump inna di car with musician extraordinaire: Justin Schwartzman. I was exited to play a show with Keysie: Seth "MILLION 7" Theodore and Drummer: JAYME ARRIDONDO. These guys are some of the baddest musicians on the scene. The Caspar Inn is a regular stop for bands touring the West Coast, and is always a fun place to play.

Once again Jah Sun longside Ishi Dube on the 101. Checked into our hotel rooms... I'm not used to quality hotels (usually sleep in a sleeping bag, don't go barefoot, and try not to touch anything), I felt like Kevin from Home Alone. We arrived at Club Six and the session was Rammm. JWS Always does it right, it's good to know that they are behind the controls when you are about to perform.It is always a joy to watch WINSTRONG and SOUL MEDIC perform. This session made me further realize the potential within this group of artists called LIONCAMP.

Drove to San Antonio and played a show at a nice place which i gather is owned by the a relative of one of the HEAVYWEIGHT DUB CHAMPIONS. The people were so cool. Reminded me of Humboldt folks. The next morning, bassie, gitzy, keysie and I flew back to Oakland and drove back to Humboldt.
03/12/2008 08:00 PM - FLAMINGO CANTINA (SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST)
We arrived at the Austin Convention Center. This city practically gets taken over for this event. Our fearless leader, JAH SUN figured out where we needed to go in order to get our SXSW badges.... the top floor ....and I'm scared of heights. Its one thing in an elevator, but this place had really, really tall, mostly glass escalators. I tried to remain calm, but vertigo kicked in. Just get me to the top fast! Once on the top floor, I remained completely still, hugging the wall. As soon as I got my badge, I was in the elevator and on the bottom floor quick style! Enough about my fears. There were drawings, workshops, demos, gift bags, seminars and all kinds of stuff throughout the city. Eventually it was time to load in sound check and perform. This experience was entirely different than the previous night. There were other reggae artists and fans steadily steaming in and out of this venue. We played our set and were well received. Also playing that night were: INNER VISIONS, KUSH and the BLOOD FIRE ANGELS, the AGGROLITES and more. The place was packed! Afterwards, we took the opportunity to check out the full SXSW experience. We went to Sixth Street which though I've never been, reminded me of Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras. We stayed up late partying... and had a wonderful time!
03/11/2008 08:00 PM - THE THREADGILLS (SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST)
The THREADGILLS is a historic venue. Many greats including JANIS JOPLIN, WILLIE NELSON, STEVIE RAY VAUGHN, and many more either got their start there, or have performed there at some point! It is a restaurant and a bar with an amphitheater outside. Throughout the evening, there were a number of performers. Almost every act was one or two, or three guys playing either country/ folk/ or some sort of Americana.... it was going to be an interesting genre switch. Eventually I heard the MC's voice over the P.A... "In just a few minutes here, we're gon' have Jah Sun and the boys up here".... "just a few minutes?" I thought, "this is a 7-piece band with drums, bass, keys guitar, and the whole nine yards." After eating up a good part of our time slot with a whirlwind sound check, we played the show. I'm not sure most of the patrons knew quite what to think about us, but JAH SUN's family and friends were very supportive!

Thanks to JAH SUN, I was able to fly to Austin, Texas and perform at South By South West. EXPLAIN WHAT SXSW IS! Jah Sun, The HIGH VOLTAGE BAND, and I boarded our plane in Oakland late that evening and finally arrived in Austin at around 7AM. Eventually we got situated at a friend's house. Jahn (who used to live in Humboldt) was so hospitable to us BIG UP!!

My family and some friends celebrated birthdays at HumBrews. DJ Dub Cowboy invited me to sing some tunes to help raise funds for a deep groove society member who was injured in a car accident. Vibes was nice, Cool graphics projection, Great music selection, Rob Payne and Dub Cowboy niced up the celebration!
